Kintsugi
"kintsugi" means "mending with gold" and is the Japanese art of repairing broken pottery. Behind this piece is the hope that racial relations can be mended by making damage productive, similarly to kintsugi. Pain is both the result of the fragmentation of the plate and the means through which the plate can be put together again. Although we think that resolution must somehow make things as good as new, there is no cure that erases the remnants of the damage done. Traces of our pain, distrust and fear live within us, haunting us when we try to glue the fault lines back together and make it appear like they never happened. For this reason, in order to heal, we should recognize our collective brokenness and honor that pain instead of hiding it.
All consuming
"All consuming" is a critique of the idea that everything is for sale and nothing is sacred, not even religion and ideals. Many of us accumulate an appalling amount of not only stuff, but also tinder dates and sex partners, because consumption has become an end in itself. We consume excessively and indiscriminately, as the anatomic drawing suggests. The all-consuming man has a mouth, a stomach and grabbing hands to blindly satisfy the insatiability of his wants and desires.
Mountains and Water
Mountains and Water is inspired by traditional Chinese landscape paintings and speaks to how the most invisible members of our society are the ones carrying the burden of it.
